Ajax captain casts possible doubt on Ten Hag’s Man Utd move

Ajax captain Dusan Tadic remains hopeful about the prospect of Manchester United managerial candidate Erik ten Hag staying.

Ten Hag struck a reported verbal agreement with Manchester United earlier this week to become their permanent head coach on a three-year contract.

The Dutchman is thought to have stunned two particular Old Trafford officials during a round of negotiations over the role, impressing with his frank assessment of their recent failings.

But Tadic believes Ajax could yet keep the 52-year-old in charge, although the former Southampton midfielder accepts that Ten Hag would suit the Premier League.

“I hope he stays, he is a great trainer. One of the best in the world,” he said, adding that Ten Hag should “fit well” in England.

“He is so well informed about our opponents and always knows exactly what a game requires. Tactically he thinks two steps ahead of the opponent. You will know what to do when you are on the pitch.

“It is a pleasure to work with him. It is logical that there is interest for the trainer and players of Ajax. That will always be the case.”

In the same press conference, Ten Hag was asked why he was “keeping quiet” about the speculation.

“Because I serve Ajax,” he responded. “We need to win the two remaining trophies.

Pushed further on the matter and why he was reluctant to announce his departure or clarify his future, he added: “I am not afraid. I will repeat myself one more time. Do you have questions about the cup final? About Ajax?”

Ajax face PSV in the final of the Dutch Cup on Sunday, with the pair separated by four points ahead of the final five games of the Eredivisie season.

It has been suggested that there will be no official announcement from any party regarding Ten Hag and Manchester United while Ajax’s season remains in the balance, for fear of disrupting their pursuit of two more trophies.

Ten Hag has already won two Dutch Doubles and one Johan Cruyff Shield in five years at the Amsterdam giants, success which helped him outlast a field of eight other Manchester United candidates.
