Jurgen Klopp has provided a promising update on Mohamed Salah’s proposed contract extension at Liverpool, as “the decisive parties are talking”.
The forward’s current deal at Liverpool is due to expire in 2023. He has been linked with a move away of late and Barcelona are said to be interested in him.
It was reported on Sunday however that Salah is now ‘on the verge’ of agreeing to a three-year contract extension.
The Egypt international has been in sensational form this term as he has grabbed 28 goals and ten assists from his 37 outings. He is without a league goal in two games, though.
Klopp has acknowledged that the player and club are working towards agreeing an extension:
“The decisive parties are talking to each other and that’s all I need,” Klopp said (quotes via BBC Sport).
On Salah’s form, Klopp added: “For me, the performance level is important, how he brings players together.
“It’s a tough period for Mo and Sadio [Mane], coming back from international duty and being available again. We see him every day – there is nothing to worry about.”
Liverpool face Benfica in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night. Klopp suggested that they are a ” tough opponent”:
“I don’t think about being better, I think about us being on top of our game. That’s the plan for all the games. You try to improve in general. Benfica maybe aren’t where they want to be in their league but it’s a tough opponent.
On Luis Diaz offering insight on Benfica: “He tried, but we didn’t understand a word! With Vitor Matos and Pep Lijnders and Diogo [Jota] and Luis we have enough specialists for Portuguese football. But we analyse anyway as normal – we don’t need any inside stories. We had meeting this morning with the boys.
“There is a lot of quality in this team and experience. It is an interesting challenge. That is how it should be. I am really happy and I am really looking forward to it.
“Full squad is available. Curtis [Jones] had a little swelling, and disappeared overnight. Trent now, 4-5 days is ready as well.”
Speaking on the challenges of chasing the quadruple, Klopp insisted that this is what they “dreamed of”:
“It is nice, we enjoy it. Training sessions are very short. The meeting we had this morning was shorter than the training session.
“It is the situation we would have dreamed of.
“[Liverpool’s maturity] is massive but it is not the only thing we need. We need desire, mentality and excitement. You can’t buy that – you have to mature as a player, as a coach and as a team. You judge things calmer in the future. That is experience.
“We have played games before when we were 1-0 up and we were still running like mad. I want my players thinking in the right way and that is what I saw on Saturday.”
