Arsenal are plotting a surprise swoop for Aston Villa centre-half Ezri Konsa, according to reports.
The 24-year-old has impressed for the Villans since they returned to the Premier League in 2019.
He has made 85 top-flight appearances for the Midlands outfit but has not played in a Villa win since February 26.
Steven Gerrard’s side have lost three in a row – all by one goal – and are now 11th in the league table with 16 defeats from 30 games.
Konsa penned a new long-term contract last year, however, Football Insider claim that Gerrard has told the defender’s agent that he is willing to listen to offers for him.
The report says that Arsenal are ‘tracking’ the former England Under-21 international as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his defence with another senior centre-half.
The Gunners are also reportedly interested in Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz and striker Ollie Watkins.
Luiz has starred in the Villans’ midfield, but the Premier League side may be forced to cash in on the Brazilian this summer with his contract expiring in 2023.
With Kieran Tierney out for the rest of the season, Arsenal manager Arteta may have to look to the young defender to fill in for the Scotsman.
However, Agbonlahor does not think Tavares will play again this campaign after greatly struggling in recent months.
“Tavares, I don’t think he’ll play again,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider. “He’s been dragged twice at half-time in the last couple of months. He didn’t look very good at all against Palace.
“But Xhaka can’t play left-back. He’ll be targeted by teams for his lack of pace.
“It’s a bit of a headache for Arsenal. This is where they need to show what they are made of. It’s going to be a very fascinating race to see who gets into the top four.”
