Arsenal are reportedly keen on extending Gabriel Martinelli’s contract “as soon as possible”.
The Brazilian signed for the Gunners from Ituano in 2019 and has made 75 appearances for the north London club.
His progress at the Emirates Stadium was hampered in 2020 when he suffered a serious knee injury. However, Martinelli has made his most Premier League appearances (20) in a single season in this campaign.
Arsenal are keen on tieing their young talent down to new long-term contracts after successfully agreeing fresh terms with Emile Smith Rowe last summer.
Renewing Bukayo Saka’s contract remains a priority. The Gunners hierarchy are also working on extending Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah’s stay at the Emirates with both out of contract at the end of the season.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal want to begin negotiations with Martinelli “as soon as possible”.
“Yes, I want to talk about contracts,” Romano said on his Here We Go Podcast (via HITC). “We spoke about Bukayo Saka many times, but Gabriel Martinelli is out of contract in 2024, so he is not an urgent topic for Arsenal, but they want to get this done as soon as possible.
“So, in the coming months, Arsenal will be in contact with Martinelli’s agents, because they want to continue with him and offer him a new deal.”
Meanwhile, PSV attacker Cody Gakpo has revealed that he “likes Arsenal a lot” and that he “looked up to” their legendary forward Thierry Henry.
It was reported last month that Arsenal are among the Premier League teams interested in Gakpo. He is valued at around €40m by PSV.
“The Premier League is a big league. Virgil van Dijk plays there with Liverpool so I like to watch them,” Gakpo told The Sun.
“We are not the same kind of league but I think we try to look at the Premier League and learn about it. Everybody wants to play one time in the Premier League. I don’t favour one team but I like Arsenal a lot.
“I looked up to Henry when I was younger because he was a tall guy who played on the wing.”
