Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes there is only one winner in the Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard debate.

Rooney spent 13 years at Old Trafford, where he won five Premier League trophies and one Champions League playing with Scholes.

Scholes won 11 league titles in total and was also an integral part of the United side that won the treble in 1999.

Gerrard, on the other hand, failed to win the Premier League in his career.

Rooney told Sky Sports (quotes via the Daily Mail): “Playing with Scholesy for a long time, and seeing what he does, and I know Thierry Henry is arguably the best player in the Premier League, but I think Shearer has to go in for his goalscoring record, and for Scholes, what he did for you in the team, and how he dictated games for the team.

“He is a bit underrated.”

“I think he is a bit underrated, certainly not with myself or Manchester United fans.”

Asked by Jamie Carragher if he’d choose Scholes over Gerrard, Rooney replied: “Yeah.”

After putting former Manchester City captain in his Hall of Fame, Rooney was asked if he considers the Belgian to be the best centre-half in Premier League history.

Rooney said: “No, I’d probably go for Rio (Ferdinand). But I think John Terry was the toughest I faced.”

Meanwhile, Rooney says he would choose Mauricio Pochettino over Erik ten Hag to become Manchester United manager.

“I think Pochettino has done it in the Premier League, he knows the Premier League,” said Rooney.

“At Tottenham he brought in a lot of young players, and at Southampton as well he brought a lot of young players through, so if I’m choosing between one of them two, that’s who I’d choose.

“I’d go with Pochettino and I’d give him time I think. For managers now they need time to come in and actually make their print on the club and on the team and if they give him time I think he’ll do well.”
