Former Man City boss Roberto Mancini has been tipped for the Man Utd job by former Premier League striker Darren Bent.
Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag have emerged as the frontrunners for the job but Luis Enrique and Julen Lopetegui are also understood to be in the minds of the Man Utd hierarchy.
Reports claimed earlier this week that Pochettino’s camp believed the job was now ‘Ten Hag’s to lose’ after the Dutchman interviewed for the job.
The Daily Mail said that the expectation at Ajax ‘is that their coach will leave at the end of this campaign and could move to England’ after a successful period at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
However, Dutch football expert Marcel van der Kraan insisted yesterday that there is another “two other major clubs in Europe” after Ten Hag, who is “very excited” about the “concrete” interest.
Italy were beaten 1-0 by North Macedonia on Thursday night as the Euro 2020 champions failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second successive time.
And there are now doubts over whether Mancini will continue as the Italy boss despite leading the Azzurri to Euro 2020 glory at Wembley last year.
If Mancini does leave Italy, then former Tottenham striker Bent reckons the Italian – who led Man City to their first Premier League title – would be a great choice as the new Man Utd boss.
“He has proved he can do it in this country and I think it is vital that he has that Premier League experience,” Bent said on talkSPORT.
“He has gone on to win a massive trophy with Italy in the Euros, so you can’t question his pedigree in terms of winning things.
“If you’re looking for a winner, I suppose the counter argument is that people will say Jose [Mourinho] was a winner and it ended quite badly. He did win trophies for United, but people would say he left the club in a worst state.”
Bent added: “It would be a big deal, him obviously winning Manchester City their first Premier League title, to then go to United.
“But we have seen managers do this before.”
