Ferdinand uses ex-Prem duo example to endorse Ten Hag to Man Utd

Rio Ferdinand would like to see Erik ten Hag become the new Man Utd boss after being impressed by the Ajax boss’ handling of “rough jewels”.

The Dutchman and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino have emerged as the frontrunners for the vacant permanent manager’s position at Old Trafford.

Julen Lopetegui, Thomas Tuchel and Luis Enrique have also been mooted but it seems unlikely that one of them will beat Ten Hag or Pochettino to the job.

Man Utd are struggling this season with Champions League qualification in the balance after fourth-placed Arsenal went four points clear of them recently with a game in hand.

Future Man Utd manager (?) Luis Enrique: The ridiculous stats

Many Man Utd supporters are unhappy, not only with the team’s results, but how Man Utd are now playing and Ferdinand thinks Ten Hag – who has been warned off the job by Louis van Gaal – can bring an exciting style of football to Old Trafford.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “Ten Hag, the way his team plays, if you could replicate that at Man United, now we are talking.

“His recruitment is unbelievable there, he has a conveyor belt of talent that comes through that feeds the first team. He deals with rough jewels, people like [Sébastien] Haller, disregarded in England, [Dusan] Tadic, smashing it.”

On Ten Hag, Ferdinand added: “A club of the size of Man United with the egos and personalities in that changing room, its very different going to Ajax in that dressing room to this dressing room. Ajax is a big club but in comparison to United it is very different.”

Ferdinand met Pochettino while doing a feature for BT recently and, having spent some time with the former Tottenham boss, the ex-Man Utd defender would welcome him at Old Trafford.

On Pochettino, Ferdinand said: “I spent a bit of time with him and he really impressed me as a person, him and his staff, men of detail. I would see him thrive and really flourish in an interview.

“I think he would impress the hierarchy and decision makers at Old Trafford if you have him in front of you. He certainly impressed me.”

Ferdinand continued: “I wouldn’t be disappointed with Pochettino.”
