Foster reveals ex-Man Utd man ‘could’ve been the best player in the world’

Former Man Utd goalkeeper Ben Foster claims Anderson “could have been the best player in the world” if he’d cared enough.

Anderson, currently the assistant manager of Turkish side Adana Demirspor, was once regarded as one of the most promising teenagers on the planet, joining Man Utd from Porto for €30m in 2007.

The Brazilian, though, failed to live up to the hype, making only 118 starts in seven-and-a-half years at the club before joining Internacional.

Gossip: Man Utd eye Abraham with doubts over Nunez deal

He would win four Premier League titles and one Champions League during his time at Old Trafford but was unable to consistently contribute to the side.

But Foster believes that his former Man Utd team-mate could’ve been the best in the world if he’d applied himself more.

Speaking about Anderson, Foster told the UTD Podcast: “He could have been the best player in the world at one point, I promise you he could have. Everybody would say that he could have been the best in the world at one point.

“But he just didn’t care, he didn’t care about anything. Honestly, he didn’t care about anything. But you put him on a pitch and he was like that.

“Carlos Tevez was the same sort of thing. Put him on the pitch and oh my god. There has got to be something in being South American, there’s got to be something in that.”

And Foster is not the only former Man Utd player to suggest this, with Rafael – who now plays for Brazilian club Botafogo – insisting Anderson would’ve been the best if he’d stayed “professional”.

Speaking in his joint autobiography with his brother Fabio, The Sunshine Kids, Rafael said: “I will say something about Anderson – if he had been a professional football player, he could have been the best in the world. I’m saying this was all seriousness. I don’t know if he ever took anything seriously.

“He just loved life in such an easy and casual way. In some ways that was a quality. It was what made him so popular and one of the most popular players at the club. But he would just eat whatever was put in front of him.”
