Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has turned down a huge contract offer from Manchester City, according to reports.
Haaland has been the subject of great transfer speculation in recent weeks, months and years, with his release clause of £68m set to come into effect this summer.
And it had appeared that Man City were pulling away from their competition with multiple reports suggesting he will join Pep Guardiola’s side.
Borussia Dortmund advisor Matthias Sammer seemed to suggest the move was a foregone conclusion in an interview with Amazon Prime nine days ago, before backtracking and insisting he “didn’t hear anything”.
Co-host Mario Gomez started: “I’m very excited to see how the Guardiola-Haaland combination will work if it comes to that.”
Sammer replied: “They will both benefit from each other. Because Pep, of course – I was able to experience him for three years – has a certain idea. I can also imagine dealing with a centre-forward, no question. But he will also have to learn from the centre-forward.”
After the host asked him whether the deal was already done, Sammer said: “I don’t know. I was fully focused on this match (Man Utd vs Atletico Madrid).”
He then said: “I didn’t hear anything today, yesterday, the day before yesterday. I know City is after him. The numbers – I had whiplash! I passed out. My wife picked me up again. Accordingly, it is possible.”
However, Spanish publication AS (via Sport Witness) claims that Haaland ‘rejected’ City’s offer ‘last week’ but that it was ‘not definitive’ as he continues to consider all his options.
They describe it as a ‘big offer’ of €600,000 a week (£500,000 a week) but that Haaland is ‘still waiting’ for Real Madrid, the team he ‘wants to join’, to make a solid offer.
It is expected that the full cost of any transfer for Haaland will be in the region of €200m which is why Los Blancos seem to be having doubts about the deal.
AS adds: ‘The question is to know if the boy [Haaland] will withstand the pressure that City, his father and Raiola are exerting on him or if his desire to play in white is so strong that he follows the [Kylian] Mbappe route.’
