Henderson tells fans they were ‘wrong’ to boo an England ‘colossus’

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson thinks England supporters were “wrong” to boo Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

Having kicked off World Cup preparations with a 2-1 comeback win against Switzerland at the weekend, the Three Lions boss made 10 changes for the friendly against Ivory Coast on Tuesday.

Under-fire Man Utd captain Maguire was among those brought in and was greeted by a smattering of boos at Wembley, where his name had received a similar reaction on Saturday.

There were even some jeers during the defender’s first few touches of the ball in the 3-0 win against 10-man Ivory Coast and Henderson took to social media to defend his England team-mate.

Rating the players: England 3-0 Ivory Coast

“I can’t get my head around what has happened at Wembley tonight,” Henderson wrote.

“Harry Maguire has been a colossus for England. Without him, the progress made at the last two tournaments would not have been possible. To be booed at his home stadium, for no reason? What have we become?

“What happened tonight was just wrong. As someone who wants to win with England, I feel fortunate to share a dressing room with him. We all feel the same!”

Fellow England team-mate Jack Grealish also echoed Henderson’s thoughts on the boos Maguire received, calling the reaction of some Three Lions fans “ridiculous”.

“Personally I think it’s ridiculous,” Grealish said after England beat the Ivory Coast on Tuesday night. “Even tonight he was brilliant. Our first two goals, first one him driving out with ball, second one driving a bit and passing to Ollie. Not every centre-back can have those qualities.

“He’s been a fantastic servant for his country and it’s ridiculous for him to get booed. It wasn’t something the team liked. Harry’s a strong-minded person. His performance tonight will have done him the world of good. It will only spur him on. It’s not nice to hear but you’ve got a job to do.

“We had a brilliant relationship with the supporters last year at the Euros and we need to keep it like that into the World Cup.”
