Hoddle warns Chelsea that £48m man could make them ‘look stupid’

Timo Werner could make Chelsea “look stupid” if they allow him to move to another club in the summer transfer market.

The Germany international has underwhelmed for the Blues since completing a £48m move from RB Leipzig in June 2020.

Werner arrived at Stamford Bridge with a scoring record of 95 goals in 159 matches for the Bundesliga side but he has failed to replicate that kind of form at Chelsea.

The 26-year-old has bagged just 19 goals in 81 appearances for the Blues and has only managed to score seven Premier League goals in total.

But Hoddle thinks Werner could go on to score loads of goals elsewhere if Chelsea allow him to leave in the summer with numerous clubs reportedly interested.

“He doesn’t look confident in a Chelsea shirt and looks more at home in Germany,” Hoddle said in an interview with Goal.

“He seems to affect the game more from the bench than when he starts. That’s not bad to have someone like that up your sleeve from the bench who you can look upon to change the dimension of the game.

“You’ve got to say, it hasn’t worked for him. Will Chelsea wait for another year? I don’t know.

“Werner is a weird one as you could see him moving to a club slightly below Chelsea, they sell him and he goes on and scores a load of goals again. It makes you look stupid.

“There’s a lot of players you see like that. I remember buying Helder Postiga for Tottenham who was Portugal’s striker and he was scoring goals. It just didn’t happen for him and he moved on and knocked England out of the Euros.

“It can happen like that. Something just doesn’t click and he has found it tough. At the moment, he can only impact from the bench.”

Meanwhile, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson recently said that it wouldn’t make “much difference” to Chelsea if Werner didn’t play for them anymore.

Merson told Sky Sports: “I’m not being horrible but if Werner isn’t there it won’t make much difference. He hasn’t fulfilled his potential.

“He hasn’t come with what we expected at Chelsea. The way he was playing at Leipzig, he was a different player.

“I don’t think playing in the pandemic helps anybody and I’m not sure he’s recovered from that.”
