Lukaku made ‘wrong’ decision to join Chelsea last summer – Evra

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has claimed that Romelu Lukaku made the wrong decision to return to the club last summer.

The Belgian forward moved back to Stamford Bridge last summer in a deal worth around £100 million. The Move was on the back of a stellar season in Serie A in which he helped Inter end Juventus’ title dominance.

However, the deal hasn’t paid off. Lukaku has just five Premier League goals so far this season and has struggled to nail down a starting role for Thomas Tuchel’s outfit.

The Chelsea boss often chooses to play German youngster Kai Havertz as the leader of his attack, despite him being more commonly known as an attacking midfielder.

There has also been frustration around the club over an interview Lukaku did with the Italian press earlier this season, in which he openly admitted he regretted leaving Inter and would like to return.

Now, former United man Evra has defended the Belgian’s form so far this season, but admitted he made the wrong choice to move back to Chelsea.

Speaking to Amazon Sport (quotes via Daily Express), Evra said: “People who criticise him have a short memory. Because when he arrived in London he scored and did well; then he got injured and said he missed Inter.

“In the end, he created a bit of a mess with the (Chelsea) fans. He wanted to return to Chelsea at all costs, he should have stayed at Inter after such a high-level season. He made that choice there which for me is wrong.”

Chelsea face Southampton on Saturday afternoon as they look to bounce back from a disappointing week that saw them thrashed by Brentford and Real Madrid.

Tuchel, speaking in his pre-match press conference, admitted he has had to give out some tough love to his players.

“It was not a discussion type of meeting: yesterday, it was more that I gave my point of view and that’s sometimes also necessary,” said Tuchel.

“We always take the players’ view into account. But over the last two games we felt it was maybe necessary to give our point of view.

“It was behind closed doors in an atmosphere where everybody can take criticism.

“We don’t point fingers, we don’t look for people who are guilty, we are in this together.

“But we needed to point out some things in our game where we were not happy, but it was about the game.

“We are aware of the problems and we don’t like them. I don’t know if we are concerned, but this is very untypical for us.

“We looked into it and we talked to the team about it, to try to figure out how to improve and to stop this direction of travel as soon as possible.

“It’s not like us at all to defend like this and that’s why we didn’t see it coming. It wasn’t the case before the national break and it’s not so easy because it doesn’t fit into a pattern.”
