Newcastle to adopt ‘pragmatic’ approach in summer transfer window

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will operate on a smaller summer transfer budget than the one he was given in January, according to reports.

The club’s Saudi-led takeover was completed earlier this season so they now have significant funds at their disposal.

Each Premier League club’s signing of the season so far

The Magpies spent more than £90m in the winter transfer window as they targeted fresh faces to help aid their fight against relegation.

New signings Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Matt Targett have all made an impact at St James’ Park as the Geordies have shot up the Premier League table.

With their top-flight status looking a lot more secure, Newcastle fans are anticipating a huge transfer window this summer.

However, the Telegraph (via Inside Futbol) state that the north east club will take a ‘pragmatic approach’ in the summer transfer window.

It is said that Howe’s summer budget will be ‘significantly less’ than the amount he was given to spend in the January window.

Instead of going for big-money signings, Newcastle will operate ‘cautiously’ with a budget of £60m.

The report states that the Magpies hierarchy are looking to create more legroom in relation to financial fair play regulations.

Furthermore, the smaller budget will allow for another spending spree in next season’s January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes says he is expecting the club to “strengthen very well” this summer to help them to secure a spot in Europe.

Guimaraes has acknowledged that it was a “risk” to join Newcastle but he “believed in the project”.

“It was all very fast. In four, five days we solved everything. I had little time. I never hid my desire to play in the Premier League. It has always been my dream and my goal,” Guimaraes said.

“It was a risk, but I also believe in the project. The fans are passionate about the team, it’s different. We strengthened well. Next season I believe we will strengthen very well to seek, who knows, a spot in the Champions League, in the Europa League.

“Taking the example of Manchester City, Agüero, Yaya Touré and David Silva were names enshrined in the club’s history because they believed in the project from the beginning. Here we come, me and Trippier, who came out of Atlético Madrid as a champion.”
