‘Obsessed’ Klopp tells midfielder Liverpool will pay his release clause

Liverpool are ready to back Jurgen Klopp in the summer transfer window by bringing Barcelona midfielder Gavi to Anfield, according to reports.

The Spaniard made his debut under Ronald Koeman this season in a 2-1 victory over Getafe in La Liga in August with the midfielder earning comparisons to legendary former Barca star Xavi, who is now his manager at the Camp Nou.

Gavi has been in and out the team in his breakthrough season with the 17-year-old starting 20 times in La Liga, while he has made a further five starts in European competitions.

Liverpool ‘routinely failed’ and Klopp excuse doesn’t ‘wash’

He has contributed two goals and five assists in the league for Barcelona this term and his form has seen him earn six senior Spain caps since September 2021.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the Barcelona youngster with rumours they could use the Catalan giants’ renent financial woes against them.

Gavi reportedly turned down a new contract offer from Barca at the end of last month but another report did add that Liverpool ‘no plans to sign him’ in the summer.

Despite that, Spanish newspaper Nacional insist that Liverpool boss Klopp has ‘become obsessed’ with Gavi and ‘has already asked the board to start talks’ over a deal for the player.

Klopp has asked Liverpool to ‘prepare’ a €50m offer – which meets the youngster’s release clause at the Camp Nou with his contract expiring in 2023.

Joan Laporta and the Barcelona hierarchy are still working ‘tirelessly to reach an agreement to prolong his contract’ as they want him to be a key part of their future.

Gavi has made clear that he will only renew his deal ‘if his salary is raised considerably’ and he ‘will have no problem packing his bags’ if an acceptable fails to come from Barcelona.

It is understood that Liverpool are ‘more serious’ about Gavi than Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, who have all been linked too.

Klopp ‘waits patiently, and crosses his fingers’ with the Liverpool boss telling Gavi that the Reds are ‘ready to pay the clause if he decides to leave’.

Xavi is ‘confident’ they can persuade him to stay in Spain and the advantage Barcelona have is that they can ‘promise him continuity, and also a very ambitious project’.
