Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling has outperformed Mohamed Salah this season, according to former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino.
The winger has 14 goals and seven assists in all competitions for City this season and is playing a vital role in their title charge ahead of next weekend’s showdown with second-placed Liverpool.
Statistically, Sterling remains a distance behind Liverpool’s talisman, Salah, who has 28 goals and 10 assists to his name this season, but according to Cascarino, Sterling’s performances have been more impressive than Salah’s.
While Sterling was named in the Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament as England reached the final in the summer, Salah has failed to live up to expectations with Egypt after missing out on qualification for the World Cup, a factor which Cascarino believes must be taken into account.
“Raheem Sterling has just been frightening. The year he has had since the Euros – he was brilliant then,” he told talkSPORT.
“This season, I thought, when they signed Jack Grealish I though Raheem might be a bit part player in this City team but he’s become an absolute permanent fixture. Left or right, he is ripping people apart.
“He was brilliant for England in midweek. Raheem is playing the best football of his career. Better than he was at Liverpool and better than at anytime at City.”
He added: “Mohamed Salah was fantastic at the start of the season. At the AFCON [Africa Cup of Nations – Egypt lost in the final to Senegal] he didn’t play so well and he’s had a few tricky times in international football and he’s not played as well in the last month or two.
“If I’m taking from the start of the season, and even going back to the Euros, I can’t think of a player that has played better than Raheem Sterling.”
After their league clash with Liverpool on Sunday, City then face their title rivals at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday 16 April. Both teams remain in the Champions League.
