Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor claims that Man Utd are “the new Arsenal”, while he also criticised Ralf Rangnick.
The Red Devils suffered another blow on Saturday in their bid to make the top four this season after Leicester City secured a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Man Utd are now three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and fifth-placed Arsenal with the latter having two games in hand on Rangnick’s side.
It is looking increasingly tricky for the Red Devils to qualify for next season’s Champions League and Agbonlahor thinks failing to finish fourth would be a “disaster” for Man Utd.
Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT (via the Daily Express): “Where’s the Manchester United fight to try and get in the Champions League? Manchester United not finishing fourth is a disaster, a disaster for that football club.
“They could be playing the Mickey Mouse cup [Europa Conference League] on a Thursday afternoon. It’s like Manchester United are the Arsenal now.
“They’re the new Arsenal. Arsenal have pushed Manchester United down and now it’s looking bright for Arsenal.”
Former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor thought Man Utd were “painful” to watch against Leicester and criticised Rangnick for his tactical decisions.
Agbonlahor added: “I just look at how the mighty have fallen. Manchester United, you’ve never seen a performance like that.
“First half, no intensity, no one trying to get the ball back, it was painful watching Manchester United playing a false nine. I don’t know if they’ve been watching Man City this season and think they can do it but that was painful first half.
“Marcus Rashford – [Edinson] Cavani and [Cristiano] Ronaldo are out and Rashford’s not starting. Honestly, the tactical decisions from Rangnick were a disgrace and them set of players, they’re selling Manchester United fans short.”
Meanwhile, Rangnick has faith that Marcus Rashford will regain some confidence for Man Utd as he was left out of the starting XI against Leicester, despite the Red Devils having no other fit strikers.
“Marcus, it’s no secret that he is not having his best time right now,” Rangnick said. “It has to do with rhythm and confidence, it’s our job to help him to get this confidence back.
“The only thing we can do is speak to him regularly and tell him what we expect from him and what he should do. The rest has to be done by himself.
“It is possible to develop within a couple of weeks a level of confidence where you can be a different player again.
“We all know that Marcus can play better, but in the end he has to take the steps himself.”
