Rio: Man Utd have had ‘pants down’ twice over ‘criminal’ transfer decision

Former Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand has criticised the Premier League club for allowing some of their most valuable players run their contracts down.

The Red Devils were held at home to Leicester City on Saturday in a 1-1 draw in another blow to their hopes of finishing in the top four this season.

Man Utd are still three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal but Mikel Arteta’s side have two games in hand on Ralf Rangnick’s men.

There have been rumours of unrest around the club all season with Pogba’s future at the club also being a big topic of discussion.

The France international’s contract runs out at the end of the current campaign and there is no sign that Man Utd will renew it.

And Ferdinand thinks it is criminal that Pogba, who they bought for £89m in 2016 – and others have been allowed to run their contract down in recent times.

Speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “That’s because business has been done poorly I think at the club.

“I don’t think we should be allowed players to get down to this stage of their contracts, I don’t think it should happen.

“If someone like Marcus [Rashford], like Pogba, you want to keep these players if they’re playing well, if you have the desire to keep them get it done and dusted.

“Economically, to let someone leave you’ve spent £80m-£90m, come in and leave plus wages, leave on a free transfer is absolutely criminal.

“Twice. It’s like we’ve pulled our pants down twice. Unbelievable.”

One player who has renewed their contract is Bruno Fernandes, who on Friday put pen to paper on a new contract that ties him to Man Utd until 2026 with the option of a further year.

The Portugal international called for the Red Devils to raise their standards after their disappointing draw against Leicester.

“Everyone is disappointed,” Fernandes told MUTV. “This result was not the result that we want but there is nothing we can do now.

“We have to look ahead to the next game and understand that the standard of this club has to be higher and better, and we know that we are capable of that.”
