Rooney insists he’s ‘got a feeling’ over Man City-Liverpool title race

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has tipped Liverpool to “nick” the Premier League title this season from under the noses of Manchester City.

Liverpool, who beat Man Utd 4-0 on Tuesday, are currently one point behind the Citizens in the Premier League table with City leading the way for most of the season.

The Reds recently closed a huge gap and are now one City slip-up from taking charge of the Premier League title race.

And Rooney reckons Jurgen Klopp’s side will just pip Pep Guardiola’s men to the title this season with six matches remaining.

“I’d prefer none of them but obviously one of them is,” Rooney said on Beanyman Sports.

“I think Liverpool might nick it. I think they’ve really looked strong over the last few months and I think winning the FA Cup semi-final could have an impact on that.

“So I’ve just got a feeling that Liverpool might nick it. I hope not – I’d rather City win it.”

Jamie Carragher recently suggested that the rivalry between Liverpool and Man City is the “greatest rivalry in English football history”, despite only being formed in recent seasons.

He wrote in his Daily Telegraph column: “Liverpool versus Manchester City has become the greatest, most intense and highest quality rivalry in English football history.

“There is a uniqueness to it. This is the first time the two best teams in England are the two best teams in the world, led by the two greatest coaches of their generation.

“I can hear the dissent from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fans as I argue this. There are plenty of head-to-heads worthy of comparison.

“Many will claim that the fixtures overseen by Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger at their peak were of similar quality and packed just as much of an emotional punch.

“To me, the parallels run out of steam when applied to European competition.”

And Rooney thinks City versus Liverpool is currently the biggest rivalry based on recent success. He added: “I think when two teams are fighting against each other to win the league that rivalry is there. Obviously Liverpool and Manchester United, the history of that rivalry has been there for a long time.

“But you see now the rivalry between City and Liverpool purely because they are the two best teams. So, for now it’s probably a bigger rivalry than what United-City is for instance but if you are successful that rivalry comes.”
