Wayne Rooney thinks Man Utd should build their team around Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire next season.

The Red Devils will have a new manager in charge next season with interim boss Ralf Rangnick set to move into a consultancy role at the end of the campaign.

Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are the current favourites to take over and whoever it is will have a big job on their hands.

Top ten best Premier League signings of the season

Man Utd are currently seventh in the Premier League table and in danger of missing out on a place in the Champions League next season, although Crystal Palace did them a favour last night by beating Arsenal 3-0.

And Rooney has selected four players who any new manager can build around next season, he told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I think [Jadon] Sancho will be better next year, Marcus [Rashford] will be better next year.

“They’ve got good young players. I think Jesse Lingard should be playing for them because he brings energy, brings quality. Scott McTominay’s done well,

“So they do have some good young players, you just have to get some confidence and get them believing that they’re good players and perform at the best level.

“And then obviously, whoever the new manager is, I’m sure he’ll bring his own players in and build that through.”

“He’s a goal threat but the rest of the game they need more, they need young hungry players.”

On watching Man Utd this season, Rooney added: “I have been [to watch Manchester United] a few times and it looks like a team of individuals.

“They would want the season to stop now and forget about qualifying for the Champions league. They are not going to compete next season in the Champions League.

“They have to rebuild and put themselves in a place, in three years time, where they can challenge again for the Premier League.”

Man Utd captain Harry Maguire has come under heavy criticism this season for a number of poor performances but Rooney thinks he could be a vital part of any rebuild.

“I like Harry,” Rooney said. “He hasn’t been on his best form like a lot of players but for England he looks like a world-class centre-back. If he can get his confidence back he can be a big part of [the rebuild].”
