Barcelona will pursue a deal for Liverpool forward Mo Salah this summer if they fail to land Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland, according to reports in Spain.
There have been reports in recent weeks that indicate Manchester City are now the favourites to land Haaland with the Norway international set to leave the German giants this summer.
Barcelona and a number of other clubs had hoped to sign Haaland with the striker scoring 80 goals in 82 appearances since signing for Dortmund in 2020.
And Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo indicate that they will move their attention to Salah if they are given no chance of landing Haaland this summer.
The report claims that the ‘economic difficulty’ of signing Haaland could see Barcelona leave any pursuit with Salah ‘the option that Xavi likes the most’ as an alternative.
Barcelona like that Salah has ‘enough personality to be the leader’ while they also appreciate his footballing ability and his ‘commercial hook’ in the African market.
The Catalan giants are ‘not in a hurry’ and are hoping to deal with any potential transfer nearer the summer when his lack of contract renewal has ‘become more entrenched’.
Salah has openly admitted that he wants to remain at Liverpool but has urged the Reds to make him an acceptable offer sooner rather than later.
Mundo Deportivo add that Salah ‘is fixated on Xavi’ and is ‘in love with the type of football’ that the former Barcelona midfielder has his side playing.
Meanwhile, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson claims that Salah will leave if neither Liverpool or the player’s representatives “budge” soon.
Robinson told Football Insider: “It’s a difficult situation. If nobody is willing to budge there is only one possible outcome and that is that he leaves.
“I am sure Klopp is doing all he can do get the club to budge slightly. To replace Mohamed Salah is an almost impossible task.
“How much is that going to cost? Liverpool have got other quality options in attack but Salah’s responsible for a lot of the goals. If he leaves there would be a big onus on other players. It would leave a huge gap were he to leave.”
