Former Liverpool attacker Dirk Kuyt has backed Ajax boss Erik ten Hag to do a “great job” if he takes over at Manchester United.
The Red Devils are going to appoint a new permanent manager this summer. Ralf Rangnick has been their interim boss since the start of December.
Mauricio Pochettino and Ten Hag look to be the options favoured by the hierarchy at Man Utd.
The new manager will have a big job on their hands this summer as the likes of Paul Pogba, Edison Cavani and Jesse Lingard are out of contract.
Ten Hag has been Ajax’s manager since 2017. He has helped them win the Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup twice apiece.
Kuyt – who played 286 times for Liverpool – thinks Ten Hag is capable of doing a “great job” at Man Utd:
“Ten Hag is a great, experienced coach. He’s done his apprenticeship, if you like, with Bayern Munich’s second team, then Utrecht and now at Ajax,” Kuyt told Goal.
“He is a great manager who has improved himself so much, on and off the pitch.
“I know some people were doubting his level of speaking English, his performance in front of the camera, but you see him growing every week as a manager, and I think he can do a great job at any top side in Europe.
“His tactics, his way of thinking about football, is very interesting, and it would be great if he was to get an opportunity at a top side.”
If Ally McCoist was in charge at Man Utd, Zinedine Zidane and Diego Simeone would “appeal” to him more than Ten Hag or Poechttino:
“I know people keep saying Zidane doesn’t speak English and he doesn’t want to live here, but him and Simeone appeal to me more than most of the names out there,” McCoist told talkSPORT.
“Pochettino, I’m not sure. He did a good job at Tottenham and he’s done an OK job at PSG.
“With Ten Hag, to be brutally honest, I don’t know enough about him.
“But the one thing that’s for certain is they have to get it right moving forward. Having as many caretaker managers as full-time managers since Sir Alex Ferguson is not the answer.
“There’s a little bit of me looking at them over the last few years thinking, ‘they don’t know where they’re going, there’s no direction, they’re just plodding on through’.
“There’s got to be a massive overhaul at the end of the season – staff and management. They can’t continue the way they’re going.”
