Ten Hag ‘considers other options’ as Man Utd decision date posed

Erik ten Hag wants a number of assurances from Manchester United before he agrees to join the club and is ‘considering other options’ apart from a move to Old Trafford.

The Ajax boss has emerged as United’s preferred candidate and negotiations are progressing as they look to reach an agreement, according to The Athletic.

United is thought to be his most likely destination next season, though it’s claimed the 52-year-old is assessing other landing spots and hasn’t ruled out a fresh deal with the Eredivisie club.

But a decision is said to be close and should Ten Hag opt for a move to United, ‘dialogue can accelerate over a contract which would satisfy his expectations’.

The report claims Ten Hag would want ‘a range of assurances’ over his role, responsibilities and authority before accepting the position.

Ten Hag has a release clause with Ajax, but it’s thought that due to a ‘strong relationship’ between United and the Dutch club, his exit may be ‘handled outside of this’.

This could mean that an announcement isn’t too far away, but it’s reported that nothing will be officially confirmed until after the KNVB Cup final against PSV Eindhoven on April 17.

‘Therefore the situation is still live’, meaning United have not closed the door on other potential managers, including Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Lopetegui, and will wait to inform them of the path they have gone down when the situation is more clear.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville believes Donny van de Beek and Ralf Rangnick will be warning Ten Hag about what it’s like to work at United.

Neville said: “I read this morning that Erik ten Hag wants all these demands met or else he won’t come to the club. You imagine [what will happen] if in the next week or 10 days they can’t get Ten Hag over the line because of what’s happening at the club and how bad the club is and the state that the club is in.

“You look at what Manchester United are doing to players currently, there isn’t a player that has grown really. Look at what they did to Van de Beek, and if you’re Ten Hag I think you’re on the phone to Van de Beek and you’re asking, ‘What’s it like there Donny?’ He isn’t going to be saying anything good, is he?

“So I suspect that Ten Hag’s demands – not financial demands but control, recruitment, structure, youth – are about not being exposed to what other managers have been exposed to in this last 10 years.

“And that may be too much for Manchester United, and I suspect they’ve got maybe a difficult week or two. I still think they may get it over the line, but the reports this morning were such that Erik ten Hag’s demands are maybe going above and beyond [what United will accept].”
