A journalist has claimed that Ajax’s failure to sign Steven Bergwijn from Tottenham would “not have encouraged” Man Utd-linked Erik ten Hag to stay.
The Dutchman is one of the managers Man Utd are considering appointing as Ralf Rangnick’s replacement this summer.
The likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Luis Enrique have also been linked with the manager’s job at Man Utd.
Ten Hag has been Ajax’s boss since 2017. They currently sit top of the Eredivisie but they were knocked out of the Champions League by Benfica.
Ajax were linked with Tottenham winger Bergwijn during the January transfer window.
The former PSV star has been a bit-part player for Spurs this term. Ajax could not agree a fee with the English club, though.
Dutch journalist Henk Spaan believes it was a “mistake” from Ajax not to secure Bergwijn’s services:
“Was it Overmars who gave up the fight with his financial director, or was it Susan Lenderink herself who stopped the negotiations with Levy of Spurs?” Spaan wrote (via Sport Witness).
“It was a mistake for sure. It is not very unlikely that Ajax would have won with Bergwijn from Benfica, who had already recouped half of his transfer fee.
“A few figures from Bergwijn Saturday night: he shot three times between the posts, of which he hit twice, won three duels, had two key passes and two successful dribbles.
“The fact that Ajax could not/would not bring him in will not encourage Ten Hag to stay.”
Elsewhere, Man Utd starlet Brandon Williams has acknowledged that there is “no point” in him returning to the club this summer if he is just going to be on the bench.
“I’m playing games now and I love it,” Williams told The Daily Mail.
“I can’t wait for the weekend so I can get to the stadium. There would be no point in me going back to United and just sitting on the bench. I want to play and feel I’m better equipped for the Premier League after this experience.
“Whether it’s at United or somewhere else, we’ll deal with that in the summer. But I’ve got a job to do here at Norwich.”
