Wolves 2-1 Aston Villa: Lage’s men hold on after late Watkins penalty

Wolves bounced back from their defeat to Leeds by beating Midlands rivals Aston Villa 2-1 at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.

Manager Bruno Lage made four changes for the visit of Aston Villa.

Man-child Jude Bellingham should dodge Premier League

Morgan Sanson made his first Premier League start since January – and just third of the season – for Aston Villa.

Lucas Digne also made his return for the visitors after a hamstring injury he suffered last month, with Leon Bailey also starting.

Jonny gave Wolves a seventh-minute lead as the hosts took advantage of some comical Villa play.

John McGinn slipped in midfield to allow Joao Moutinho to take the ball and Ezri Konsa then stumbled trying to cut out his pass.

Daniel Podence and Fabio Silva had shots blocked before Jonny lashed a drive into the top corner.

Wolves doubled their lead nine minutes before the break when Ashley Young headed Marcal’s cross into his own net.

Wolves held a commanding 2-0 lead over Villa going into the break.

Villa’s Ollie Watkins scored a penalty to make it 2-1 with five minutes remaining after he was fouled by Jose Sa.

The Molineux side held on by a thread to secure a Premier League double over their Midlands rivals.
